There are a number of things to look for when measuring for shutters. We have an entire page dedicated to measuring for both interior and exterior shutters. You can visit our measuring page by clicking on this image wherever you find it within our site. -back to the top-
YES! From the beginning, Kestrel Shutters have been made custom sized to match your openings. This means we do not cut down stock shutters to make them fit your openings, it means each shutter is made to fit YOUR windows. We now also offer interior shutters and exterior shutters in standard sizes. -back to the top-
YES! We are now offering standard sized interior and exterior shutters. These shutters feature the same mortise and tenon joinery as our custom sized shutters and are also available fully assembled and in our exclusive D.I.Y. Shutter kits. -back to the top-
YES! We make a complete line of interior shutters from kiln dried Basswood. We offer you various operable and fixed louver designs including the popular Plantation style shutters as well as raised and flat panel shutters. Our interior shutters are available fully assembled and in our exclusive DIY shutter kits and come custom sized or in our new standard sizes. YES! We make all of our exterior shutters from kiln dried Spanish Cedar, a superior hardwood noted for its resistance to weather. Like our interior shutters, we make fixed and operable louver as well as various panel designs. Our exterior shutters, also like our interior shutters, are available fully assembled and in our exclusive DIY shutter kits and come custom sized or in our new standard sizes. YES! Often we are asked to reproduce shutters and shutter parts for historic sites and older homes. In several cases you will find that our standard specifications actually match the original shutters. For a quote to match your old shutters, or a new design, simply supply us with a small sketch that shows the dimensions of all the shutter parts as well as any specific information you think may help us. -back to the top-
This will depend on a number of different things. To best answer this visit our hardware pages for hinges and shutter dogs and storm hardware. Each of these pages will give you useful information in determining what is best suited for your shutters and will show pricing and ordering information as well. We do not have a square footage cost on our shutters as it does not work out fairly for you, the purchaser. Basically, because of the extra steps we take to insure that your shutters are the finest available, there is more labor involved per shutter. This is why the price for 2 shutters to fill an opening will be less than 4 shutters to fill the exact same opening. -back to the top-
If you are comparing our shutters to those you would find in your local home improvement center (Hechinger's, Lowe's, Home Depot...) you will find that our prices are indeed higher. However, you should also remember the phrase "You get what you pay for.". Such shutters are usually mass produced with little regard for precision. This is something you can see for yourself the next time you visit one of these stores. Kestrel shutters are not made to be a "quick fix" for a window covering. If you compare our shutters to those you can purchase through window fashion stores you will find that prices can vary quite drastically. At this point it is best to start comparing quality. -back to the top-
This is something that is best discovered for yourself by holding in your hands a Kestrel Shutter. All of our shutters feature true deep pocket, mortise & tenon joints. You will never see a dowel joint in a Kestrel Shutter. A very important feature in our louver shutters is how we attach each louver blade to the tilt bar. Where every other company that we know of uses staples (which eventually loosen and fall out) we use solid brass threaded screw eyes. These are actually turned into pre-drilled holes to insure that your louver blades never come loose. We also go the extra step of balancing the louver blades so that they remain in whatever position you place them; no mechanical tension screws that require you to tighten them periodically. However, the best way for you to see and feel the difference in a Kestrel Shutter we strongly suggest that you compare physical samples from every manufacture you are considering.
