| Spanish Cedar is a wood with several qualities that make it ideal for exterior shutter use as well as interior applications. It is a true hardwood unlike all other cedars. This makes it much more durable and better able to hold up to storms and hurricanes. Another important feature is that the wood grain of Spanish Cedar naturally allows moisture to "breathe" out preventing it from rotting. This is one of the reasons it is the wood traditionally used for humidors. Spanish Cedar is also very similar in coloring and grain pattern to true Honduran Mahogany which makes it an ideal cost effective alternative. Other wood species are available upon request. | |

| Description of Features | ||
| Full 1.1/4" thick stiles and rails | The stiles
and rails are flush and 1.1/4" thick to allow for our solid,
1/2" thick mortise and tenon joints. As such our 1.1/4"
thick hardwood exterior shutters are stronger than a 1.3/8" thick shutter
made from a softwoods like western red cedar. |
|
| Pegged mortise and tenon joinery | This
is the traditional, time proven method of joining shutters and doors.
We make it even stronger by using an exterior grade glue in every joint.
Part of the secret of this joint are the pegs. After each shutter
is assembled holes are drilled through the mortise and tenon joint and
Mahogany pegs are pounded through. The pegs act as a cotter pin
securing the tenon in the mortise. The result is a joint is much
stronger than the industry standard screw and dowel joints |
|
| Louver blades secured to the tilt rod with solid brass eyelets | The louver
blades are permanently secured to the tilt bar with solid brass screw
eyes which means no staples to fall out. Ever. |
|
| Self balancing louvers | Every louver
blade is balanced so that they remain in any position you place them
without the need for tensioning devices or other mechanical devices that
fail with time. |
|
| Floating panels | Floating panels insure that your panels will not crack when the expand and contract due to the weather. | |
| Description of Options: | ||
| 1.3/4" thick shutter | Ideal for
where extra strength is needed and high traffic areas. |
|
| Arched top | ||
| Bahama / Bermuda style shutters | What
makes a Bahama Shutter a Bahama Shutter is when it is mounted at the top.
This allows the shutters to prop out like an awning over the window
giving protecting from the frequent showers while allowing for
visibility and airflow. Typically one shutter is used per window
which can result in some very wide shutters. To strengthen
such oversized shutters a center, vertical stile is added but not always
needed. The shutter shown at right features 3 center stiles. |
|
| Beaded overlap rabbeting | This
feature helps to block out light and give a more finished look to your
shutters. Where two shutters meet, one will over lap the other. A
vertical bead detail is then added to the stiles. To make all the
stiles look similar we bead the front and back of every vertical edge of
your interior shutters. Square overlap rabbets without the bead
are also available. |

| Custom stile size |
From the beginning
Kestrel Manufacturing has been designing and building custom shutters
and historic reproductions. Should you have a special layout in mind or
some of the original shutters to duplicate please fax us a drawing
detailing your specific needs. This includes matching the stile
and rail sizes as well as the location of any mid-rails. Other
features of Kestrel Shutters can be customized to match your personal
taste. |

| Cut-outs on paneled shutters |
All panel shutters are available with your choice of any of our 12
standard cutouts from circa 1847-1848 or your own custom decorative
cutouts. |
|
| Faux tilt Bars | Give your
fixed louvered shutters the look of operable louvered shutters with faux
tilt bars. |
|
| Frame for insect screens and storm windows | Let us
provide you with frames that will mount to the back of any Kestrel
shutter. These frames can hold insect screens or storm windows. |
|
| Hurricane Protection | Kestrel
shutters are ideal where hurricanes are a concern. Our 1.1/4"
thick and 1.3/4 thick frames of solid Spanish Cedar hardwood,
secured with pegged, Mortise & Tenon
joinery, greatly reduce the damaged caused from flying debris.
Add our special hurricane panels to any Kestrel shutter (including
operable louver) and you will have shutters that exceed Dade County
specifications for hurricane protection. |
|
| Exterior Shutter Hardware | An extensive array of exterior shutter hardware is available to give your home that finishing touch. Choose from the largest selection of shutter dogs available (several of which are made exclusively for Kestrel) as well as hinges, slide bolts, hurricane locks and more. | |
